Chazley Hulett and William Cochran question why Alex is taking so many pictures in the lab
Hello from the Fuels Center on the Northern campus. It feels like just yesterday that I was writing my first blog. Now I’m glad to inform you that I have been given more responsibility as of late. This increase in responsibility is quite refreshing, and I am glad to accept it.
The first task given to me to perform without direct supervision was the creation of a reactant calibration curve to measure the consumption of a reagent in the synthesis of our heterogeneous catalyst. After completion of my task I presented my findings to the researchers.
Creating the curve was relatively easy—the time needed to conduct the initial data collection was very little. The first trial was quite promising, with a subsequent trial being less promising. Although the results weren’t what I hoped, we could still use it as a method of qualitatively determining reagent consumption.
The overall experience of designing, conducting, and presenting the results of the experiment was quite rewarding on a personal level. It showed me areas that I can further improve upon as well as where my strengths lie. I look forward to continuing my work with the Advanced Fuels Center over the school year.
