The team at the AOCS conference

The last few weeks at the Advanced Fuels Center (AFC) have been action packed for me. Two weeks ago I, along with other AFC staff, attend the 107th Annual AOCS Conference. It was a great learning experience for all of us. Being surrounded by researchers with the same goals and standards as the AFC was a great fuel for me to provide my peers with stimulating research.

There were hundreds of scientists attending that presented their research. Being an AOCS conference, most of the presentations were about oleochemicals. Watching and listening to them helped me gain an awareness of proper visual/oral presentation and formatting. Randy gave a presentation about the research that we are doing at the Center. It was fun to listen to him speak about something he is so passionate about. It made me enjoy working at the Center with these awesome people even more.

Once we returned it was time for more experiments! We still needed to complete our data. Yields of 1,4-cyclohexadiene were a bit low in the previous experiments. One of them yielded no product, contrary to what we had predicted. We have been actively making slight variations to the reaction parameters to solve this.

That’s been my time at AFC the past couple weeks. Next week, more reactions.
