The Advanced Fuels Center (AFC) at Montana State University-Northern humbly started in 2006 through the Workforce Innovative Regional Economic Development (WIRED) grant. Since then, AFC has grown from a testing facility to a research center with the focus on developing “drop-in”, sustainable fuels and biomass-based additives. Through the years, AFC added new research facilities, expanded its capabilities, and advanced its technical proficiency. Today, it provides expertise for synthesis of bio-based renewable fuels and chemicals, heavy duty performance engine testing, and environmental emissions testing. AFC also provides technical assistance to start-up Montana companies for proof of concept and/or refinement of new technologies.
